Pattern, material and foundation decide how a block paved surface looks in year ten. A herringbone bond interlocks under turning wheels, a basketweave suits period frontages, and the right sub-base keeps either one flat — so we design all three together.
Herringbone, basketweave, stretcher bond, fan and running bond patterns each have different visual characters and structural properties. Herringbone in particular offers superior interlock and load-bearing strength. We advise on the right pattern for your project and property style.

Permeable block paving is fully SUDS-compliant, allowing rainwater to drain naturally through the surface into the sub-base below. It reduces surface water runoff, lowers flood risk and often removes the need for planning permission when resurfacing a front driveway.

Forty-five degree herringbone gives the best interlock, because no joint line runs straight in the direction of travel — braking and turning forces spread across many blocks instead of opening a seam. We recommend it for driveways and keep basketweave or stretcher bond for lighter-traffic areas.
Sinking is almost always a foundation failure: too little sub-base, poor compaction or missing edge restraints. We excavate to the correct depth, compact the stone base in layers and set firmly haunched edges so the blocks cannot spread or migrate.
Often, yes. Where the blocks themselves are sound we can lift the sunken area, rebuild the base beneath it and re-lay the same blocks, finishing with fresh kiln-dried sand — at a fraction of the cost of full replacement.
If your front garden drains poorly or you want to avoid separate drainage works, yes: permeable blocks let rain pass through purpose-made joints into an open-graded base, satisfying SUDS requirements in most cases without channels or soakaways.
Weeds seed from above into the jointing sand rather than growing up from below. Topping up the kiln-dried sand after cleaning, or having the joints sealed, keeps them out — and a well-compacted base means anything that does appear pulls away easily.
