Driveways
A driveway is a groundworks project with a decorative top layer. Whether the finish is block paving, resin, tarmac, shingle or concrete, every Essex driveway we build starts the same way: excavation down to solid ground, drainage that carries water away from the house, and a compacted base matched to the vehicles it will carry.
If you are undecided between surfaces, this page is the place to start. We install all of them, so our recommendation is based on your site, budget and daily use — not on the one product we happen to sell.

Experience
Decades of driveway installation across every major surface type means we know how each material behaves on the clay, gravel and chalk ground found around Essex.
Quality
The same groundwork standard sits under every finish we offer: correct excavation depth, a compacted stone base, planned falls and drainage, and edgings that hold the whole surface together.
Service
One quotation covers the entire job — excavation, spoil disposal, base, drainage and finish — so there are no gaps between trades and no surprise extras.
Overview
Choosing a surface is the last decision, not the first. How the ground drains, what will park on it and how much upkeep you will accept all narrow the field — and then block paving, resin, tarmac, shingle or concrete becomes the obvious finish for the job.
We work with the full range of driveway surfaces — block paving, resin bound, resin bonded, tarmac, shingle and concrete. Our team helps you choose the right material for your budget, property style and long-term needs.
Every driveway starts below the surface. Proper excavation, sub-base construction and drainage installation are what separate a lasting driveway from one that fails within years. We get the groundwork right every time.
Many of our surfaces — including permeable block paving and resin bound — allow rainwater to drain naturally through the surface, meeting planning requirements and reducing runoff without additional drainage infrastructure.
Regardless of the material you choose, every driveway we install is built to last. We use trusted suppliers, correct installation techniques and quality finishing throughout to deliver a surface that performs for years.
Durable, versatile and highly attractive, block paving is available in a wide range of colours, textures and laying patterns. It can be tailored to suit any property style and delivers long-lasting kerb appeal with minimal maintenance.
Resin bound and resin bonded driveways offer a smooth, modern finish with excellent drainage and very low maintenance. A popular choice for contemporary homes and commercial properties looking for a clean, high-quality surface.
Cost-effective and practical, tarmac delivers a clean hard-wearing surface while shingle and tar & shingle options add traditional character to driveways and access roads. Ideal for both residential and larger commercial areas.
We also install concrete driveways and can advise on the full range of surfacing options for your property. Get in touch to discuss your requirements and we will recommend the most suitable solution for your project.

Testimonials
“Andy Harragan and Sons replaced my block paving drive with resin and fully replaced the patio, sleepers and lawn in my back garden. From the initial visit through to completion, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Andy and his team. Professional, polite, clean and nothing was too much trouble. I have recommended Andy to family and friends (and passers by admiring my drive!)”

FAQ
It depends on the site as much as the look. Block paving offers pattern and colour and repairs invisibly; resin gives a seamless, permeable, modern finish; tarmac is the most economical over large areas; shingle suits rural frontages. Because we install every major surface, our recommendation follows your ground conditions and budget rather than a product line.
Most domestic driveways take between three days and two weeks depending on size, chosen surface and how much excavation and drainage work the site needs. You get a programme with the quotation and we keep to it.
Yes. Channels, gullies, soakaways and permeable bases are priced into the groundworks from the start — getting water off the surface and away from the building is a planning consideration as well as a practical one.
We excavate the existing surface and sub-base where required and take the spoil away as part of the quoted price, leaving the site clear before the new build-up goes in.
Yes — widening for a second car is one of our most common jobs. We match the existing surface where possible, and where an exact match is impossible we design a deliberate contrast band so the extension looks intentional rather than patched.
