Landscapes & Patios

Our Landscape and Patio Services

A patio is designed backwards from how you will use it: morning coffee or evening sun decides where it sits, the dining table decides how big it is, and the house's brick and window lines decide the material. We build patios, courtyards and landscaped seating areas across Essex in porcelain, natural stone, block and resin.

The invisible details are what make an outdoor room work — falls that shed water away from the house, bases that keep slabs from rocking, joints that stay put through frost. Those are ours to get right, so the finished space is simply yours to enjoy.

Overview

Patios Done Right

Materials, levels and drainage decide whether a patio still looks right after ten winters. We plan all three before any ground is broken — then build the space with the same care below the surface as above it.

Material Selection

We offer a wide range of patio materials including block paving, natural stone, porcelain and resin. Each material has unique characteristics — we help you choose the right one for your style, budget and intended use.

Design & Layout

From contemporary minimalist designs to traditional cottage-style patios, we work with you to create a layout that complements your property, maximises your outdoor space and integrates seamlessly with your garden.

Drainage & Preparation

Proper drainage is essential for a long-lasting patio. We install correct falls, sub-bases and drainage solutions to ensure water runs away from your property and the surface remains stable and level.

Expert Installation

A patio is only as good as its installation. We lay every patio on a properly prepared base with correct jointing, edge restraints and finishing to ensure a durable, level surface that stands the test of time.

Testimonials

What Our Customers Say About Us

Andy Harragan and Sons replaced my block paving drive with resin and fully replaced the patio, sleepers and lawn in my back garden. From the initial visit through to completion, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Andy and his team. Professional, polite, clean and nothing was too much trouble. I have recommended Andy to family and friends (and passers by admiring my drive!)

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which patio material is best — porcelain, natural stone or block paving?

Porcelain is the most stain- and fade-resistant and needs no sealing; natural sandstone has a warmth and variation porcelain cannot copy; block paving ties a patio visually to a block driveway. We bring samples to the survey so you can judge each one against your own house brick.

Why does a patio need a fall, and how much?

A patio has to shed rainwater away from the house rather than hold it against the wall. We build in a gentle cross-fall — roughly 25mm over two metres — which is enough to drain the surface but far too little to notice underfoot.

Do I need planning permission for a garden patio?

Almost never for a standard patio: ground-level paving at the rear of a house is permitted development in most cases. Raised terraces, significant level changes and listed settings are the exceptions, and we flag any of them at the survey stage.

Can you build steps, walls and lighting into a patio design?

Yes — step flights, retaining walls and integrated low-voltage lighting feature in most of our larger patio builds. Designing them together from the start always beats bolting them on later.

How do you stop patio slabs coming loose or rocking?

Every slab is bedded on a full bed of mortar over a compacted stone base — never dabs of mortar at the corners, which leave voids that crack slabs and let them rock. Joints are then filled with a proper paving compound rather than brushed sand.
